these procedures primarily took place in ambulatory surgery centers or hospitals. However,
advances in surgical techniques and technology have provided another option for patients:
office-based cataract surgery. At Boston Eye Physicians and Surgeons, eligible patients can
now receive the same high-quality surgical care in the comfort and convenience of our office.
A cataract is the clouding of the eye’s natural lens. This lens helps focus light onto the retina,
which allows us to see clearly. As we age, proteins within the lens gradually break down and
clump together, causing the lens to become cloudy. This cloudy lens can be noticed through
symptoms like blurred vision, increased glare from headlights, faded colors, or difficulty reading.
Unfortunately, no medication reverses cataracts. However, surgery can effectively treat
cataracts by replacing the lens.
Modern cataract surgery is a quick, minimally invasive procedure. During surgery, the cloudy
natural lens is removed through a tiny incision and replaced with a clear artificial intraocular
lens. Most patients return home the same day and notice improvements in their vision over the
following days and weeks as the eye heals.
Traditionally, cataract surgery is performed in ambulatory surgery centers, which are outpatient
facilities specifically designed for surgical procedures. Some patients with more complex
medical conditions may have surgery in a hospital operating room instead. In contrast, Boston
Eye Physicians and Surgeons is proud to offer office-based cataract surgery for carefully
selected patients. Rather than traveling to a separate surgical facility, eligible patients have their
procedure performed in a dedicated surgical suite located within their ophthalmologist’s practice.
The location may differ, but our commitment to safety and quality remains constant. The same
cataract surgery is performed by the same experienced ophthalmic surgeons using specialized
surgical equipment and sterile techniques. However, office-based surgery is not for everyone.
Individuals with significant medical conditions, anticipated surgical complexity, or special
anesthesia needs may still be better served in an ambulatory surgery center or hospital. This is
why our surgeons carefully evaluate each patient to determine which setting is the safest and
most appropriate.
Office-based surgery offers several advantages. Patients can appreciate the convenience of
receiving their care in a familiar environment with the same team they have come to know. It
eliminates travel between multiple facilities, making the surgical experience simpler and more
convenient. Office-based surgery can provide more streamlined scheduling and a smoother
experience from consultation through recovery. By integrating clinic and surgical care within the
same practice, physicians and staff may be able to reduce delays and provide a more seamless
patient experience. For example, same-day postoperative appointments take place at the same
location.
At the end of the day, office-based surgery expands the range of options available to patients. It
doesn’t replace ambulatory surgery centers or hospitals. Instead, it allows us to offer another
safe and convenient option for appropriate candidates, ensuring that each patient receives care
in the setting that best meets their individual needs.
